Nomination
editGiangian15 (talk · contribs) – Hello everyone, I’m a native Maltese Wikipedian and this is my second RFA that I’m proposing. The major reason that had prompted me to run for administrator in the first place fifteen months ago was due to the substandard Malta related articles pertaining to low activity in this area. During this fifteen month duration, I managed to meet all types of situations ranging from small edits issues all the way to a politically motivated vandalized article that ended up as a local newspaper article. The major problem pertaining Maltese articles is the deficiency of sources and sadly online external sources relating to Malta are very vague and thus most articles end up either speedily deleted or as stubs. There is little or no control whatsoever since foreign administrators start merging Maltese articles and deleting important sections that are in themselves very important. I’m also a member of the inactive Wiki Project Malta, sadly enough I was informed that due to the inactivity of members, the group is suspended and any effort must be done on an individual level. In any case I’m not going to give up because I know this encyclopedia has a lot to offer and hopefully together we can do a difference. Gian (talk) 05:06, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Questions for the candidate
editDear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia as an administrator. It is recommended that you answer these optional questions to provide guidance for participants:
- 1. What administrative work do you intend to take part in?
- A: Anything that is related to Malta. It is in my interest to improve the articles relating to Malta and make them more readable and linkable. My first priorities will be to clean up most notable articles and start restructuring and linking more important articles. Having just restructured the article of the Prime Minister of Malta is just the beginning of a long journey.
- 2. What are your best contributions to Wikipedia, and why?
- A: My best contributions so far have been in Politics of Malta. There are a lot of important articles and templates that I created including important articles such as the Government of Malta and Chief Justice of Malta amongst others. In any case I think I'm doing great progress which I believe will eventually be fruitful.
- 3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
- A: To be honest I wouldn't call them conflicts but such cases were very limited due to the simple fact that very limited number of users actually interest themselves in the actual writing of the articles related to Malta. During that particular occasion when the article of the Prime Minister of Malta was vandalized, I had contacted the vandal by email using the Maltese language as to understand why he made such edits. It had appeared that he wanted to have some fun. In any case it turned out to be a misunderstanding. Sometimes I have also experienced instances where a Maltese user makes use of vulgar Maltese words to insult foreign users just because he/she believes that foreign users shouldn't be allowed to comment on Malta related articles which in itself is wrong. In any case I couldn't do anything but yes I have witnessed such situations too and they are disgusting.
- Additional optional questions from Irbisgreif
- 4. You have very few edits and some gaps in your edit record, is there anything that eats up a lot of your time?
- A: Yes, good question. The fact is that during the past 15 months I had developed an ocular condition called Blepharitis which only recently I have learned to start controlling it. It was quite irritating and kept me away from the computer for some time but I couldn't do otherwise. Other factors include my activity on the Maltese Wikipedia and Betawiki which i'll be willing to give up in order to take up such a role and concentrate more time and energy on this wiki. --Gian (talk) 05:36, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Optional Question from Balloonman
- 5. Gian, I haven't looked at your edits, but your nomination statement makes you sound like a decent chap with the good of WP at heart. It does, however, raise two concerns. First, there is no real indication as to what you hope to accomplish as an admin that you can't accomplish as a non-admin. Second, the little bit that you appear to want to do, would almost be a COI if we were to grant you the buttons. So my questions for you are thus. A) Why do you need the buttons? B) What do you intend to use them for? C) Why isn't your nom statement just a big warning flag that you are going to use the buttons to further a specific agenda? (Again, I have not looked at your edits, these concerns are derived from reading what you've written above.)
- A: I need the buttons not to have fun with them, far from it. My role as an administrator will be more of a localized administrator that treats local issues. For instance at the moment I'm fed up reverting certain edits that are wrong and are from the same person. --Gian (talk) 05:36, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Follow-up So in other words, you are currently involved with another editor who is making poor edits and he needs to be blocked or the pages protected?---Balloonman NO! I'm Spartacus! 05:41, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Follow-up Answer - I'm not talking at the moment but over a span of time. For instance the article of Austin Gatt was targeted by certain vandalism. Yes I do believe that certain pages should be semi-protected at least. Some also need to be split and others like Finance Ministry should be deleted. --Gian (talk) 05:53, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Questions from ArcAngel
- 6. What are/is the most important policy(s) regarding administrative functions?
- A:There are many policies that a sysop should adhere but ultimately the administrator in question must be accountable and above all work for the good of the project.
- 7. Why are edit summaries important?
- A: Edit Summaries are important since it helps everyone to understand what is changed, such as when perusing the history of the page.
- 8. When should cool down blocks be used and why?
- A:Cool down blocks are important in certain heated discussions that get out of hand. They help to calm the situation down and give the administrator a chance to reorganize the situation.
- 9. Do you feel blocking a user who has vandalized your userpage is a conflict of interest? Why or why not?
- A:I wouldn't block a user who has vandalized my userpage. First I'll try to contact to user to understand why he's doing this practice. If he keeps on doing it. I'll ask another administrator to see if blocking the user temporarily will have any help.

Discussion
editI recommend a withdrawal here as you are not likely to receive confirmation as you have less than 800 edits to your credit, even a year after your last RFA It's better to withdraw before your RFA gets snowballed. ArcAngel (talk) 05:39, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks for the offer but for now I stand by my nomination. I do understand that I'm below the minimum recommended amount by a small margin but my RFA is a plea which I think Wikipedians will understand. Thank you --Gian (talk) 05:45, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Suit yourself, but you were warned about the "politics" of RfA land. ;) ArcAngel (talk) 05:55, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I don't deny that edit count is important but I'm an established user even though it might not seem so and I'm hoping fellow people will take this into consideration. I've waited and learned during these past fifteen months. --Gian (talk) 06:01, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is your edit history since June of 08:

If you exclude this month, where you are running for admin, you have less than 200 edits in the past 16 months. In 10 of those months, you have fewer than 10 edits. This RfA has zero chance of passing. I would encourage you to withdraw as well, I'd also encourage others not to oppose.---Balloonman NO! I'm Spartacus! 06:06, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose
edit- Oppose. I'm sorry, but your answer to question 8 seriously worries me. Irbisgreif (talk) 06:24, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Neutral
edit- I refuse to oppose RfA's that are certain to fail. But you only have 800 edits, which is not just a little below the recommended minimum, but significantly below the general guideline of 3000. To make matters worse, only once in the past 15 months have you had 100 edits in a given month and in almost all of those 15 months you had zero edits. Based on your nom it looks like your heart is in the right place, it's just that you don't have the experience necessary yet. I'm also concerned about the answer to my questions. You should never block somebody or protect a page that you are involved with, you should always leave that to an uninvolved admin. Your entire nom seems as if you are seeking the buttons to use exclusively in a corner of the project where virtually nobody else roams. While working in niches is commendable, it leads to bigger potentials for abuse. Again, I think your heart is in the right place, but for now I think you should withdraw as this RfA will be closed per wp:NOTNOW---Balloonman NO! I'm Spartacus! 05:58, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- My questions notwithstanding, I refuse to jump on the oppose bandwagon, but I can not "morally support" this candidate either. ArcAngel (talk) 06:11, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I'm not going to oppose this RfA, as it has no chance of passing. That being said, your answer to question 8 was flat out incorrect. Please re-read WP:COOLDOWN. →javért breakaway 06:26, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
